Kul Kul Permaculture Farm, Bali

Kul Kul is the organic farm at Green School—a school in Bali built on the principles of sustainability and permaculture. They use many different systems that align with permaculture—from chicken composting to seed sheds and seed sharing. In addition to being a production farm, Kul Kul is also an educational farm—they host sustainability and permaculture courses, and children from Green School go there and do trainings and learn more about permaculture.

About the project

After I’d taken my first permaculture design course, I wanted to expand my knowledge more with hands-on experience in a production environment and learn more about the traditional Balinese methods of working with bamboo. I went to there to see what was happening and how I might be able to help out.

Kul Kul was already a highly-successful production garden and training center for Green School at that time. When I arrived, they were looking to expand the permaculture systems they already had in place + introduce new systems to grow more food.

During the next five months, I interned at Kul Kul and help them build a number of new systems and had a chance to train the staff and some Green School students in permaculture techniques.

 What we did

In addition:

  • Introduced and design new vertical growing areas such as compost towers and bamboo trellises, to optimize their space and increase growing area

  • Facilitated permaculture trainings for some of the children

  • prepare new types of growing areas based on techniques such as double-digging and square meter gardening to increase production and quality of harvest
